Acclaimed by the London Times as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theatre,” Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, founded in 1973, draws its inspirations from Asian aesthetics and creates works with contemporary relevance that has received enthusiastic receptions from audience around world. With the virtuoso Cloud Gate dancers trained in traditional Chinese disciplines that include meditation, internal martial arts, chi kung, and calligraphy, the artistic director Lin Hwai-min has created a unique dance language that prompts Dance Europe to acclaim “No company in the world dances like Cloud Gate. It presents a distinct and mature Chinese choreographic language. The importance of this evolution in Asian dance is no less profound than the impact of Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt on European classical ballet.”
This year, after its triumphant world-wide tours to Vancouver Cultural Olympiad; Kennedy Center, Washington DC; Singapore Arts Festival; Chekhov International Theatre Festival, Moscow; International Festival of Villa Adriana, Rome; Grec Festival, Barcelona; and Festival Internacional Cervantino, Mexico; Cloud Gate will return to its homeland with its most staged and internationally acclaimed work, Songs of the Wanderers.
Taking off from Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha to embark a spiritual journey, Songs of the Wonderers features 3,500 kg of golden rice grains as the only set for this 90-minute production. When the curtain opens, a stream of rice grains drizzles onto the head of a standing monk in meditation and accumulates into a mould around his feet. The rice grains are carried onto the stage forming river and hills, and rain like a summer storm. Against this golden landscape, dancers enact a series of rites to the soulful Georgian folk songs and take audience along on their journey. Throughout the whole show, the monk stands still as rice grains keep falling onto his head like sand falling off from an hourglass.
Poetic and poignant, Songs of the Wanderers is a study of time, a feast for the eyes and heart. It has moved tens of thousands of audience in New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Athens, Rome, Copenhagen, Melbourne, São Paulo, and Moscow to rave reviews from leading critics.

“The choreographer sends not only his dancers but also his audience into a grand purification ritual not unlike to the trial by fire and water of the young people in Mozart’s Magic Flute.”
Ballet International, Berlin
“I had never seen such a fascinated audience in my whole life, an audience enthralled by the beauty and the spirituality of a show, so as to be standing 25 minutes long in the most reverent silence after the curtain had closed and the light had switched on again.”
Le Figaro, Paris
