Having experienced a complicated life, Giuseppe Verdi in his twilight years wrote his final work, Falstaff , after Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and King Henry IV Parts 1 and 2. Literary critic Harold Bloom once praised this comedy among Shakespeare's prodigious output for showing his most original, colorful and dazzling characterization -- funny, stupid, naive, loathsome, and, in short, full of contradictions. Verdi penned beautifully an enjoyable opera and rendered it worthy of inclusion in every major world opera house's repertoire.
Director Ying-Chuan Wei will dig deep into the complicated roles and through the interaction of the characters reveal different human facets. Metal and transparent glass installations, round or square in shape and strong in color, will be introduced in this production to achieve the visual effect of a Mondrian painting. The overall atmosphere will be like a festive carnival.
Wei earned her master's degree in theater from the New York University. Since 1985, she has scripted and directed more than 30 works, each time exploring human nature. Wei joins hands with conductor Wen-Pin Chien in staging Falstaff . This opera promises to be a departure from the classical version.
