馬勒的一生都在與死亡共舞。馬勒的父母共生了十四個小孩，馬勒排行第二，但是十四個孩子中只有六個長大成人，因此馬勒很早就了解死亡這件事。之後，晚婚的馬勒，又因為長女瑪莉亞與次女安娜罹患猩紅熱相繼早夭，讓馬勒的生命再次蒙上死亡的陰影。雖然一生經歷如此多舛，但是馬勒仍專注於他的創作與指揮事業上，作一個搏擊命運的人。

馬勒第六號交響曲《悲劇》，描繪的是瀕臨死亡的美感。馬勒曾說：「我的第六號交響曲將會造成許多困惑，只有後代人，在接受並徹底領悟我的前五首交響曲之後，才能找出答案。」貫穿激情、絕望、復活、自然、天堂、愛的前五首交響曲精神，到了第六號交響曲《悲劇》，馬勒算是完全屈服於死亡陰影的必然到來，轉而追求死亡的淨化昇華、靈魂的救贖與對聖靈的頌揚。因此第六號交響曲雖然名為《悲劇》，但卻不是徹底的絕望，而是一位勇者在黑暗中對光明的憧憬。

Throughout his lifetime, Mahler had been dancing with death. He was the second in a family of fourteen children, among which only six survived. Therefore, he learned death in his early age. Also, not only he was in a late marriage but also his two beloved daughters both in their young ages died of the scarlet fever. These misfortunes put his life under a grate shadow. In spite of that, Mahler still persistently concentrated on his composing and conducting career. He chose to be a fighter, fighting for destiny.

The 6 th Symphony Tragic draws the sense of beauty on the brink of death. Mahler said: “My sixth will propound riddles the solution of which may be attempted only by a generation which has absorbed and truly digested my first five symphonies.” To pass through the first five symphonies with passion, despair, resurrection, nature, heaven, and love, then it's tragic, the Symphony No. 6 . Mahler surrendered totally to the compelling shadow of the death and turned himself to chase the raising purification, to rescue the soul, and to glorify the spirit. Though this so-called Tragic composition, it is not the deep despair. Instead, a hero hankers after brightness in the dark.

F. W. Nietzche said: “Loving and perishing: these have rhymed from eternity.” Mahler saw the appearance of love through death and we shall cherish the happy moment from Mahler.
