馬勒曾表示：「所謂的交響曲，對我而言，意味著可以隨自己的意思，藉任何技法為手段，去建構一個世界。」在《第一號交響曲》中，馬勒以古典交響曲的四個樂章形式，描述了巨人的奮鬥與掙扎；在《第二號交響曲》中，馬勒將之擴大為五個樂章，闡述他的死亡與復活的理念；而在《第三號交響曲》中，馬勒將樂曲再次擴大成為六個樂章，嘗試表現自然的現象，他說：「這部交響曲表現未開化與冷酷的自然界，並以音樂來擁抱世界。」
馬勒在《第三號交響曲》創作時，曾為全曲訂下「夏夜晨夢」的標題，而各個樂章分別附上如下的標題：
第一部份：第一樂章－牧神甦醒後，夏天就來了
第二部份：第二樂章－草原的野花如是說
第三樂章－森林的野獸如是說
第四樂章－人們如是說
第五樂章－天使如是說
第六樂章－永恆的愛如是說
但在出版前夕，馬勒卻把所有標題刪掉，馬勒認為音樂的欣賞，是感覺的觸動，而不希望因此限制住聽眾的想像。
雖然，這是一首沒有標題的交響曲，但幾乎可說是古今所有交響曲編制最大且長度最長的交響曲。馬勒並非無病呻吟，因為在之後所創作的交響曲中，馬勒再也不曾花如此大的精力，去單純描述自然宇宙的奧秘，對照馬勒一生的坎坷際遇，這首交響曲所描繪的境界真像夏夜晨夢般遙遠而不真實，而夢中的馬勒告訴我們的，卻是這宇宙最美的聲音！
Mahler once indicated: “ To write a symphony is, for me, to contract the world. ” In his Symphony No. 1 , Mahler adapted the classical four-movement symphonic composition to depict a giant's endeavor and struggle. In the Symphony No. 2 , he extended the work into five movements to clarify his stance for death and resurrection. For the Symphony No. 3 , again, Mahler extended it into a six-movement work to describe the natural phenomenon. According to the composer, “This symphony expresses an undeveloped and cruel nature which embraces the universe.”
During the time of working on the 3 rd Symphony, Mahler named the title as A Summer Morning's Dream . Each movement is entitled below:
1 st Section: I -- Summer marches in after Pan awakes.
2 nd Section: II -- What the flowers of the meadow tell me.
III -- What the beasts of the forest tell me.
IV -- What man tells me.
V -- What the angels tell me.
VI -- What love tells me.
Eventually before publishing this unique piece, Mahler erased all titles. His idea of music appreciation is the sincere touching of the sensory feeling but not to limit the human imagination.
Ultimately, this is a symphony without a title, but it seems to be considered the work with the largest orchestration and the longest music ever. Mahler's singular intellectual thoughts explored completely from here. He did not devote his energy to his later symphonic works as much as to the 3 rd Symphony in depicting the mystery of the nature and universe. To contrast the composer's unlucky life, the heavenly like picture, which Mahler created in the 3 rd Symphony, is a so faraway and unrealistic summer morning's dream. Nevertheless, this is the must beautiful voice comes from the universe that Mahler delivered it to us in our dreams.
