Gustav Mahler wrote Symphony No. 1 at age 24, much younger than Beethoven in starting symphonic composition. He took four years to finish it. His deeply personal musical expression about life's anxieties and excitements was met with hostility by critics at its premiere in Vienna.
Symphony No. 1 took the “Titan” subtitle, which was remotely related to the music, from a best-selling novel. But it augured well Mahler's subsequent successful symphonic output. This piece provided the framework of his lifetime work. His music about humanity, the universe, life and death paved the way for the innovations of his unconventional symphonies, all written on a huge scale. It proudly announced the dawning of a new age.
Gerard Schwarts became conductor of the Seattle Symphony in 1990. Over more than ten years, he succeeded in bringing international recognition to the once local orchestra. The multi-awarded Mark Kosower, the featured cellist of Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 , was recipient of the 2002 Avery Fisher Career Grant.
