從貝多芬的《合唱》交響曲以來,交響曲的創作逐漸與人聲產生重要的關係,而十九世紀末期的聲樂發展,除了傳承自舒伯特以來的人文精神外,經由管絃樂潤色烘托的聲樂曲,更是浪漫樂派最後的珠玉。
馬勒創作的近五十首管絃樂伴奏聲樂曲中,可說是最能展現馬勒文學素養與音樂詮釋功力的精品。五首《呂克特歌曲》,堪稱浪漫樂派最後的壓軸大作;《年輕旅人之歌》讓我們看到二十三歲的馬勒,當戀人琵琶別抱時,為愛人心碎的青春悲喜:哀嘆、失望與難以言喻的痛苦。
《呂克特歌曲》第四首《在午夜》裡,有這樣一段歌詞:「午夜醒來,向太空遙望,但沒有一顆星星向我微笑。」眾所週知,馬勒的音樂反映出他內心的矛盾、掙扎、期盼、不安等厭世情緒,但心思敏感的馬勒在心中,也住著一位眾人遺忘的天使,這是他在尋求生命解答的慰藉處所。馬勒在《第四號交響曲》中,用最簡潔的管絃樂編制,描述一段超升至天堂淨土的旅途,在經歷了第二及第三號交響曲的激越澎湃後,《第四號交響曲》呈現出恬靜、明朗、活潑與喜樂,有別於馬勒大多數作品的屬性,不只為馬勒第一段交響曲創作時期作結語,也為往後的交響曲內涵作形式與精神上的轉移。

Of nearly fifty orchestral accompaniment vocal
works, Gustav Mahler's song composition reveals his great
literary and spectacular musical interpretation skills. In
his orchestral songs, the grand five Ruckert Songs highlighted
the end of the Romantic Period and The Songs of a Wayfarer
implied Mahler's suffer from the betrayal of Mahler's lover.
He was heart-broken, sad, disappointed, and unspeakably painful.
In the 4th Symphony, Mahler
used the pure orchestration to depict a journey to a heavenly
land. Musically, this symphonic work is different than the
stormy Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 4. The sound brings
a peaceful, shimmering, joy, and blessing sensation, which
is unlike the attribute of his most works. Therefore, this
work symbolized the end of Mahler's first composing period
and represented his spiritual transformation in styles of
writing for the future symphonic music creation.
